From Simon Barnett
All religions use time as a central element in the way they celebrate. They have a sacred year – a sequence of festivals arranged in an annual cycle. Here Rabbi Mendy Lent introduces one of the most joyful festivals in the Jewish Year: Sukkot. The name comes from sukkoth in Hebrew which means ‘huts – and is an annual remembering of the time in the desert after leaving Egypt long ago, and of dependence on God now. And recalling our dependence on God is inseparable from blessing God for all that we have, our gifts and our joy.
