The below video features contributions from Dr Jason Blackstock (Department for Science, Technology, Engineering and Public Policy, UCL), Professor Reiner Grudmann, (STS Research Priority Group, University of Nottingham), Professor Philip Moriarty (School of Physics and Astronomy, University of Nottingham), and Dr Kate Roach (writer and researcher).

The session includes discussion of misconceptions about scientists and journalists, poor practices at academic journals (and how post-publication peer review might help), the limits of ‘role hybrids’ such as science policy wonks, ideas for training future leaders in science policy and public decision-making, ‘blue sky’ vs policy-driven research, fiction as a way to communicate science, and the use of fiction by policymakers when ‘scenario planning’. The presentations finish with a fantastic short story about ‘impact’ written and read by Kate Roach.
