From Davide Massimo
This short film (15’, Italian with English subtitles) tells the story of two exceptional women from Imperial Rome as told by two poetic inscriptions (in Latin and Greek) preserved at the Museo Nazionale Romano (Rome): these women, though in very different ways, seemingly embraced unconventional marriages, the details of which remain mysterious for us. Their story is apparently narrated by their husbands, which complicates the picture further.
The film has been written by Dr Davide Massimo (Classics and Archaeology - University of Nottingham), Dr Chiara Cenati and Mirko Tasso (Ancient History - University of Vienna), who feature in the film. This was produced in cooperation with the ERC-funded project MAPPOLA (University of Vienna), which focuses on the production of verse inscriptions in the Roman Empire, with a special focus on the middle and lower social strata (more info at https://mappola.eu/). The film was funded by the Faculty of Historical and Cultural Studies of the University of Vienna and supported by the Italian Ministry of Culture - Museo Nazionale Romano, the University of Nottingham, and the British School at Rome. It was directed by Federico Zanotti with the assistance of Daniele Comelli. Full details of reproduction rights for the images and the soundtrack are included in the final credits.
