Professor Tom O’Loughlin points out a complexity in the use of the word ‘eucharist.’ It is usually thought of as just a technical name for a ritual – the ritual practiced among Christians and more commonly called ‘Holy Communion’ or ‘Mass’ or ‘the Lord’s Supper.’ But the word ‘eucharist’ is preferred by theologians because it refers to the fundamental activity that manifested in those various rituals with diverse names: the activity of thanking God, of blessing the Father in union with Jesus Christ.
