While we can prepare great plans to utilise NVivo in realist coding and analysis, sometimes the messiness of the real research world can require us to quickly amend and adapt. This presentation will outline a planned approach to using NVivo and the insertion of an additional analysis stage using 'emergence' in response to real world messiness.

Dr Sonia Dalkin is an Associate Professor of Applied Health Research in the Faculty of Health & Life Sciences at Northumbria University in the UK. Sonia has significant experience in realist approaches, providing training in the approach throughout the UK and internationally. In 2018 she co-authored ‘Doing Realist Research’, published by Sage. Her work portfolio reflects her realist experience with projects in palliative care, long term conditions and public health. In 2018 Sonia launched the Northern Realist Research Team Hub (NoRTH).
Dr Kathryn McEwan is a Research Fellow at Northumbria University currently working on a realist evaluation of community end of life care services. Her research interests are social and health inequalities, social policy, and realist methodology.
