In 1917, at the height of the First World War, F.B. MacNutt edited a collection of 17 essays entitled The Church in the Furnace. These essays were written by Anglican army chaplains who reflected on what they were discovering about Christian faith and practice through their war experiences. Now, after a century, the collection is a major source for the study of religion and war – and some of the issues are still live ones for Christian theologians
