Dr Marian Kelsey explains that when we see the names of cities in the Hebrew Bible (especially the names of non-Israelite cities such as Tyre) we should not think of them as simply references to geographical locations, but, within the narrative, cyphers for whole cultures. Using Tyre as an example, she shows how this city functions within the narrative and how this awareness can contribute to a better reading of the text
