Dr Frances Knight introduces William Temple (1881-1944), Archbishop of Canterbury (1942-44) who has been described as the spiritual father of the Welfare State. A quintessential member of the Anglican establishment, Temple preached a gospel of social justice; and at a time when denominational in-fighting was common in Christianity he was an advocate of ecumenism and a founding figure behind the World Council of Churches.
