Dr Claire Taylor of the Dept of History, one of the scholars belonging to that department’s Heresy Network, introduces the notion of heresy, heretics and dissent as a phenomenon that historians study as a window on societies and their relationship to notions and centres of authority – and the problems inherent in any attempt to define ‘heresy.’ She also reflects on what our current fascination with heresy may say about contemporary society.
